Fire cider was developed by the respected herbalist, teacher and author Rosemary Gladstar, in the late 70s. The original formula calls for infusing fresh horseradish, ginger, garlic, onions, and cayenne pepper in apple-cider vinegar for three to four weeks, then finishing with honey. Gladstar says “the combination of flavors was fabulous — hot, sour, pungent, and sweet.”
Fire cider is an alcohol free tonic -a fiery infusion of goodness used to restore, stimulate, or invigorate the body. It is said to boost energy, ward off colds and flus, ease sinus congestion, lower blood sugar, curb cravings and improve digestion.
The daily stress in our lives can have a profound effect on the immune system. As the owner of The SoakingPot Infusion Spa, I’m always looking for alternative flu “shots” to help keep us healthy. I am very excited to offer our customers Fire Cider made right here in New England by Shire City Herbals!
Founder Dana St. Pierre of Shire City Herbals began making early versions of Fire Cider based on a home remedy his feisty grandmother, Elisabet, a German farm girl used to make to help keep her family hale and hearty.
In 2010 his wife Amy, who’d noticed a profound effect on her overall well-being and energy levels since using Fire Cider, suggested they make a batch for the Shire City Sanctuary Shindy, a Berkshires-based holiday artisan festival. By the end of the festival, they had sold out.
When people who had purchased from them at the fair showed up on their doorstep, asking for refills, they knew they’d hit on a winning formula. They went into business with Amy’s brother, Brian Huebner, to create a company dedicated to making customers’ lives a little healthier and more exciting, one flavorful sip at a time.
And flavorful it is! Nothing can prepare you for your first shot of Fire Cider, myself and everyone I know had their own idea of what it was going to taste like only to have that idea literally blown away! It’s a different kind of hot, it’s spicy, tangy, bitter and sweet, it’s also addicting! My first shot took my breath away, it was definitely a five alarm fire to my system but it surprisingly extinguished itself in a minute or less. As their shot glass indicates it DOES cure boredom and you DO feel the atomic boom!
The SoakingPot carries all three flavors -Original, African Bronze and Honey Free (Vegan) in 8oz or 16oz bottles. Stop in for a free sample shot!
